Privacy

CommerceGeek (commercegeek.com) is a personal project run by Scott Pringle, not a company. This page explains what personal data we collect, why, who handles it for us and what your rights are. We collect as little as we can: you can read everything on the site without giving us any personal data.
Who is responsible for your data
Scott Pringle is the data controller for the personal data described here. For any privacy question or request, email info@commercegeek.com.
What we collect and why
Weekly digest. If you sign up, we keep your email address, when you signed up, which page you signed up from, when you confirmed and, if you leave, when you unsubscribed. We only send the digest after you confirm through the link we email you, and every issue has a one-click unsubscribe link.
Pro waitlist. If you join the waitlist, we keep your email address and anything else you choose to tell us: your role, how many stores you look after and what you would want alerts about. We use it to tell you when Pro alerts are ready and to decide what to build.
Store index opt-out. If you ask us to remove a store from our index, we keep the domain and, if you give one, your email address, so we can keep honouring the request and contact you about it if we need to.
Spam protection. When you submit a form, we store a one-way hash made from your IP address and the form’s name, to limit repeated submissions. Your IP address can’t be recovered from it, and it is deleted after 24 hours.
Visit statistics. We use Umami Cloud, which counts visits without cookies and without collecting personal data. It also counts digest sign-ups and confirmations, without recording who made them.
Hosting. Like any website, our host processes your IP address and basic request details to deliver pages and keep the site secure.
We don’t sell your data or share it for advertising. The AI tools we use to help draft articles work only with public sources, never with your personal data.
Cookies and local storage
The public site sets no cookies, and there are no advertising or tracking cookies. If you switch between light and dark mode, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage so the site remembers it; it never leaves your device. The admin area, used only by the person who runs CommerceGeek, uses sign-in cookies.
Our legal bases
Digest and waitlist: your consent. You can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing or emailing us.
Store index opt-outs: our legitimate interest in honouring your request.
Spam protection, security and visit statistics: our legitimate interest in running a safe, working website.
Who handles data for us
These providers process personal data on our behalf, under contracts that limit what they can do with it:
Supabase: our database, which stores sign-ups and opt-out requests.
Resend: sends the digest and confirmation emails, and holds confirmed subscribers’ email addresses.
Netlify: hosts the website.
Umami Cloud: cookieless visit statistics.
Some of these providers are based in, or store data in, the United States. Where data leaves the UK, it is protected by safeguards recognised under UK data protection law, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or the UK–US data bridge.
How long we keep it
Digest: while you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we keep your email address marked as unsubscribed so we never email you again by mistake. Ask us and we’ll delete it completely.
Digest sign-ups you never confirm: deleted 30 days after we send the confirmation email.
Pro waitlist: until we have told you Pro alerts are available, or until you ask us to delete it.
Store index opt-outs: for as long as we run the index, so the opt-out keeps working.
Spam-protection hashes: 24 hours.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to how we use it, or to receive it in a portable format. Email info@commercegeek.com and we will reply within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk. We’d appreciate the chance to put it right first.
Children
CommerceGeek is written for professionals and is not aimed at children.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we use personal data, we will update this page and the date at the top.
